I Will Follow

There's a sense of rawness to this track. It's not quite as polished as some of the later more effect-ladden pieces.

A prime example of U2's early style - it's a little rough around the edges.  ;-)

Basically, all you need is a bunch of perfect fiths and fourths played in straight eighth notes and that's it.

It really is rather minimalistic.

But...

It wouldn't be The Edge if there wasn't an edge to it.   ;-)

The interesting thing here is the use of the open high E string.

Instead of grabbing the fifth in one of the standard ways either on the first or second stringset like this:

E5 (highest 2 stringsets) - click to enlarge

you take advantage of the open high E string like this:

Why?

The timbre changes and you'll get that special open string sound.

Also, this way you don't have to change positions at all. You stay put in 10th position, yet there's the sense of sonic movement. Due to the clever use of the open string and the minimalistic, yet catchy melody.

The philosophy of less is more works well for The Edge - let it work for you as well.
